RE:                 East Brookwood Private Well Contamination Update

Thirteen private wells in the East Brookwood section of Byram, east of Debbie Drive, have been found to be contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE), a commonly used solvent and degreaser.

Eight of these homes have installed dual carbon filter systems to remove contaminants; others are scheduled for installation.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) expects to be in the affected area on June 29th to conduct further water testing.

If you are in the affected area and have not yet tested your well please contact Mark Herzberg of the NJDEP at (609) 633-1369 for further information and scheduling.

Anyone who has received test results of TCE in excess of the state standard should call the NJDEP at 877-WARN-DEP (877-927-6337) to obtain a case number.

If you have already tested your well it is IMPORTANT that you submit the physical test results to either the Sussex County Health Department (Fax (973) 579-0399, attention Marcia Chirico) or the Byram Township Board of Health (Fax (973) 347-0502, attention Valerie Cannata) as soon as possible.  Some residents have already tested but have not supplied their test results.

Copies of tests results, whether positive or negative, and notification of installed treatment systems are critical to the ongoing investigation.
