Girl Scout Gold Award Project - BYRAM RECYCLING - 12/20/2009
WHAT TO DO WITH GRASS CLIPPINGS? - 05/29/2009

Byram Township uses Blue Diamond Disposal as our Trash and Recycling Hauler.

Byram Township residents have once a week trash pickup and once a month recycling pickup as part of their taxes. There is no additional charge for this service.

Blue Diamond will also do Bulk Pickup... However, Remodeling Debris or large amount of materials/items must be taken to Sussex County Landfill. There is a nominal charge for this disposal. Please see Recycling Information for further information.

Recycling is state-mandated and failure to observe recycling regulations will result in fines and temporary discontinuance of service.

The Byram Trash Recycling information is also contained within the Byram Township Informational Calendar. You can pick up a Calendar at the Town Hall. Any questions can be directed to the Township's Recycling Coordinator.

Homeowners can take their Recyclables to the Recycling Center. The Recycling Center is open on:

Wednesdays: 7:30AM - 2:00PM and Saturdays: 7:30AM - 4:00PM.

Trash / Recycling Information

  1. Trash Collection occurs once a week as scheduled.  Trash should go out the night before pickup day (pickup can be as early as 6AM/
    • Please be aware that your garbage will NOT be collected if there is recycling included.  A sticker will be placed on your garbage stating the reason it was not collected.  Recycling has been mandatory since 1987 and the State has become more stringent with municipalities that are not in compliance.
  2. Recycling is picked up once a month.  Co-mingled food and beverage glass jars and bottles, plastic (soda, water, juice, milk and detergent ONLY),tin and aluminum cans must be clean with lids removed and placed for pickup in a reusable container.
    • Paper goods such as bundled newspaper, bundled magazines, junk mail, office paper, shredded paper and flattened cardboard, pizza boxes, frozen food containers, tissue boxes, cereal boxes, etc. can be put out in brown paper grocery bags or trash cans and will be collected by a separate truck.
    • Recyclables in plastic bags will not be picked up.  Plastic bags, plastic hangers, plastic toys, plastic lids, flowerpots, pie trays, egg cartons and Styrofoam are considered regular garbage and will not be collected with your recycling. If any of these items are mixed in with your plastic, glass and tin/aluminum cans, your recycling barrel will be stickered with a violation notice and not picked up.
  3. Bulky Waste – you are allowed LIMITED BULK pickup each week. Bulky items are limited to household items such as sofas, chairs, dressers, mattresses, desks, carpeting (rolled & tied in bundles of no more than 4 feet), plastic toys etc.  If you are planning a major cleanup you must arrange for rental of a roll-off container.  Metal items and auto tires are NOT collected roadside and can be brought to the recycling center.
  4. Construction Debris and Hazardous Waste – absolutely no construction debris (concrete, wood scrap, sheetrock, tiles, etc.) will not be collected or permitted at the recycling center.  Construction debris and hazardous waste (including paint cans) must go to the Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority (county landfill) on Rt. 94 in Lafayette (973-579-6998).
  5. Loose Leaves and small brush (no more than 4” diameter) may be brought to the township recycling center mid-April to mid-October, weather permitting.  The town offers 2 roadside pickups for leaves bagged in biodegradable paper bags, usually in December.
  6. Christmas tree pickup begins the second full week in January, weather permitting.
